Aston’s Bakery supplied our neighborhood with wedding cakes and birthday treats for over 80 years before it closed.

Its original location was on Wycliff and Lemmon. Second-generation owner Richard Aston later moved to Preston Center, and its last location was on Lovers Lane; it closed in about 2015 because of high rent.

This 1956 news story about an 800-pound cake shows the inside of the shop and Aston’s dad, Bill, moving the cake with the help of four other guys. The cake celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Hesse Envelope Co., and the shop’s front door had to be taken off its hinges to get it out the door.
