Former presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton visited a Ukrainian church in Chicago recently to show support for the country.

Bush, who has a residence in Preston Hollow, and Clinton laid sunflowers wrapped in blue and yellow at Saints Volodymyr and Olha Ukrainian Catholic Church in Chicago. Blue and yellow represent the colors of the Ukrainian flag.

Chicago is considered a sister city of Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine.

The Ukrainian Village, where the Chicago church is located, has a large Ukrainian population. Immigrants from the eastern European country began populating the enclave beginning in 1870. The area now has three Ukrainian churches, plus Ukrainian-owned businesses, a grammar school and a national museum.

Russian military forces invaded Ukraine in February. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, about 3.1 million Ukrainians have been forced to leave, and millions more are displaced within the country.

George W. Bush released a statement after the initial invasion, calling Russia’s attack “the gravest security crisis on the European continent since World War II.”
