As Dr. Michael Hinojosa closes out his 13-year tenure as superintendent, it is up to the Board of Trustees to find a new superintendent to lead the district. However, while we have the final say in hiring the new superintendent, the trustees have set up a process for community participation and input. For this reason, and to include our community in this process, we ask our families to complete an online survey to identify important characteristics for the new superintendent and to identify the most pressing challenges facing the district.

With this information, we will work with the search firm to conduct a nationwide search to identify and recommend superintendent candidates. To learn more about the selection process and complete the survey, visit www.dallasisd.org/superintendentsearch.

Discover innovation in our neighborhood

Everything your child needs to succeed is here in Dallas ISD. Our neighborhood schools are home to innovation, championship athletics, fine arts, dual language, extracurricular activities and so much more.

To learn more about what’s happening right around the corner, families are invited to participate in a Discover Dallas ISD neighborhood schools event April 23 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. To learn more about Discover Dallas ISD, visit www.dallasisd.org/thisishome.

Enrollment season is here

Dallas ISD families can enroll their children today in Pre-K for the 2022-2023 school year. A solid start to early childhood is more critical than ever. Children who attend Pre-K learn to socialize with their peers, manage their emotions and get the foundational academic skills to boost their lifetime learning potential. To better assist our families, we will have several events to help them enroll and obtain information about our programs. Information about these events can be found at www.dallasisd.org/prek.

Great things are going on in District 1

  • Congratulations to Dutchess Gutierrez from Thomas Jefferson High School and Adriana Campos Low from Prestonwood Montessori at E.D. Walker for being among the 12 teachers nominated for this year’s Teacher of the Year award, which will be presented May 10. Gutierrez is a dance teacher at TJ and directs both the Liberty Belles Dance and Drill Team and the Thomas Jefferson Dance Company. Campos is a bilingual teacher and one of the founding teachers at Prestonwood.
  • Earlier this month, the National Football Foundation Gridiron Club, Dallas Chapter, honored 62 high school student-athletes from the Dallas-Fort Worth area based on their athletic and academic accomplishments and leadership in the community. This distinction included two football players from District 1, John Popoca from Thomas Jefferson High School and Johnathon Ware from W.T. White.
  • Finally, robotics is back to in-person events, and Dallas ISD teams continue to excel! I want to shout out to the robotics team at E.D. Walker Middle School for being one of the eight middle schools that advanced to the VEX Robotics World Championship taking place May 3-12 at the Dallas Convention Center. We’ll be following their progress with great interest in this space.
