The City of Dallas Monday launched an interactive crime-data map. The Crime Analytics Dashboard, which contains two years’ worth of data, includes year-over-year crime trends as well as metrics for violent crime, family violence, hate crime, murder and even property crimes.

The system which, according to the City’s chief data officer Dr. Brita Andercheck, shares more data than the previous system without compromising victim data, is a “one-stop shop,” she says, for most crime-related data.

This comes several months after Andercheck spoke with The Advocate about concerns related to the removal of certain previously reported intel.

“The goal of this dashboard was not only to share crime related data and information with our community, but also, to do so in a way that is easily understood by a viewer.,” Andercheck says. “One of my primary goals is to help drive better insights from our data.”

Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia calls the tool “another important resource for the people of our city” and says he hopes Dallas residents will use it “to find out more about what is happening in their community, and also learn more about the hard work the men and women of DPD put in each day to fight crime in our city.”

Analytics on the dashboard are organized by areas like council district, zip code and police areas such as beat and reporting area. The Office of Data Analytics and Business Intelligence has published an accompanying story page to the dashboard that provides instructions on navigating the dashboard and using its interactive features.
