Dallas ISD will require students in select grades to have clear or mesh backpacks this school year.

The change affects students in sixth grade and older. Other backpacks will no longer be allowed.

Last week, the district invited parents to share their thoughts on the matter in a brief online survey.

“We acknowledge that clear or mesh backpacks alone will not eliminate safety concerns,” Dallas ISD says on its website. “This is merely one of several steps in the district’s comprehensive plan to better ensure student and staff safety.”

Secondary students will receive a free clear backpack from Dallas ISD before the start of the school year.

Students will still be allowed to carry a non-clear pouch no larger than 5.5 inches by 8.5 inches to hold personal items including phones, money and hygiene products.
