Screen capture from DPD body cam footage

The Dallas Police Department on Tuesday released body camera footage of the 37-year-old woman who opened fire upon the Love Field Airport (8008 Herb Kelleher Way) ceiling Monday morning.

Before playing the video, DPD Criminal Investigations Unit Assistant Chief Reuben Ramirez outlines the details of the incident, which ended with suspect Portia Odufuwa hospitalized with a police-officer-inflicted gunshot wound. She was conscious when arrested and can be heard moaning and crying in the video.

This is the DPD’s third officer involved shooting this year, according to Ramirez.

The following is a lightly edited transcript of Ramirez’ comments along with the video (warning: it might be disturbing for some).

“On July 25 at 10:57 a.m. Odufuwa arrived at Dallas Love Field airport and exited a red Kia sedan.

“The preliminary investigation shows her enter the terminal and walked into the restroom at 11:04.

“The suspect leaves the restrooms wearing a black hoodie with the hood over her head and her hands in the front pockets, walks from the bathroom to the Southwest Airlines ticket area and says she has an announcement to make. Witnesses say she starts to ramble, talking about marriage, incarceration, and then she said she was going to blow up the airport, pulling a gun from her sweatshirt.

“At 11:06 she pointed the gun toward the ceiling and fired two rounds. Officer Ronald Cronin, a 15-year veteran of the Dallas Police Department was in the immediate area and engaged, verbally commanding her to drop the weapon. She pointed the gun at Officer Cronin and a bystander.

“Officer Cronin, taking cover behind the ticket kiosk, fired his department-issued weapon, hitting the suspect multiple times.

“The shots fired cause the suspect to fall to the ground and drop the weapon. Officer Cronin held his position and backup officers arrived to take her into custody.

“Officers started first aid and called Dallas Fire Rescue for assistance. The suspect was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Law enforcement found rounds from Odufuwa’s weapon showing she shot at Officer Cronin.

“She has been charged with aggravated assault against the public servant. Additional charges are possible.

“The Dallas Police Department’s special investigations unit responded and continues to investigate the incident.

“The Dallas County District Attorney’s office is conducting an independent investigation as well. The Dallas police were assisted at the scene by the FBI and the ATF.

“In an effort to be transparent. Dallas Police Department is releasing the body worn camera footage of the incident.”
