The Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy’s Glee Club sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” to a crowd of 20,000 at a Dallas Mavericks game last month.

The April 4th trip was highly anticipated by the Glee Club, capping off the school year with other performances at North Park Center, Dallas Police Department Graduation and the Multicultural Festival.

The magnet school, opened in 2011 in Oak Cliff, is Dallas’ first all-boys school and Texas’ first school named after President Barack Obama.

“I have been looking forward to this moment for the past year,” said Dustin Barksdale, BOMLA’s 2023-2023 Teacher of the Year and director— also a proud Mavericks fan. “We have been thinking about it, talking about it, and we were finally able to step foot on the court and perform for the Dallas Mavericks!”

The Mavericks secured a down-to-the-wire win against the Atlanta Hawks, 109-95.
