After 24 long years, neighborhood restaurant Suze is closing, with plans already underway for a new restaurant to take its place.

First opened in 1998 near Midway and Northwest Highway, Suze announced its closure in a press release, stating its heartbreaking last day will be Saturday, June 29.

“It has been my honor and the honor of my great staff to have shared such a tenure here with all of you,” owner and executive chef Gilbert Garza said in a statement. “I’m sure we will miss each other but the time is absolutely appropriate to bid adieu.”

The closure of Suze coincides with a transaction to transfer 4343 W. Northwest Hwy to hospitality group owner Greg Katz, with an expected move-in date in November. Katz, a Preston Hollow native, leads Katz Bros LLC., with his brother Nik, which includes notary Beverly’s Bistro and Bar, Clifton Club, and the newly opened Green Point Seafood & Oyster Bar.

“Gilbert and I have a shared history, as we both trained at the Mansion on Turtle Creek, albeit at different times,” Katz adds. “I’ve admired him for so long and am grateful that he’s worked with us over the last several months, entrusting us with the space where he grew such a wonderful community.”

The restaurant has been a neighborhood favorite for more than 20 years, with menu staples like cast iron tenderloin, Prince Edward Island mussels, and orecchiette in basil vegetable stock.

The new venture teases “signature South African references” to honor the Katz family legacy. There will be an accessible menu, warm staff and will work with a nationally recognized interior designer from Wallace Johnson Studio.

“I am so happy and excited that this special place will be in the hands of one of Preston Hollow’s own,” the statement said. “I can’t think of a better man to take the reins of this place and I can’t wait to come in as a customer myself and see all that they are planning to do.”
