If you’ve walked through NorthPark Center in recent years, you may have noticed something missing. Or, rather, five things missing.
Five Hammering Men, 1982, the series by American sculptor Jonathan Borofsky has returned to its original location in NorthPark’s SouthCourt, between Neiman Marcus and Dillard’s on Level One.

The series features five metal silhouettes with motorized arms slowly hammering up and down, meant to be “a global symbol — a champion of all working classes and a celebration of their accomplishments,” according to a NorthPark statement.
Five Hammering Men first came to NorthPark for the mall’s 20th anniversary in 1985. This was the first time the series was shown in the United States.
The series was notably missing for the past four years, which NorthPark describes as “a period of rest for conservation to ensure the longevity of the piece.”
The series’ return comes just in time for NorthPark’s 60th anniversary. According to the statement, this return is the first of several additions to the mall meant to celebrate this milestone.
NorthPark Development Company President Nancy A. Nasher said, “Bringing this iconic series by Jonathan Borofsky back to NorthPark is aligned with our mission to make museum-quality art accessible to the public and a wonderful way to celebrate our 60th anniversary.”
