One of Texas’ best new restaurants is right down the street. Mābo, which opened in February 2024 in the former Rock ’n Roll Sushi location in Preston Center, nabbed the #3 spot on Texas Monthly’s 2025 list of Texas’ best new restaurants.

Chef Masayuki Otaka brought the omakase establishment to the neighborhood after working for over 25 years at Teppo, a yakitori-style restaurant that closed in July 2022.

Mābo also incorporates yakitori into the menu, but it is combined with a Kappo, a style of dining that emphasizes the role of the chef.

The restaurant only seats eight. Only two dining slots, each three hours long, are available on the five nights a week Mābo is open. For $200 each, guests can enjoy watching Otaka make his way through an elaborate menu. For an additional fee, diners can add wine, sake or tea.

Reservations for Mābo can be made here.
