Later this month, Edgemere Senior Living is hosting the region’s annual Walk for Parkinson’s in a partnership with the Dallas Area Parkinson Society (DAPS) on April 12 from 8 to 11 a.m.

The free event will feature emcee Amelia Mugavero, entertainment by the Honey Button Band and raffles. Those who register and make a $20 or more donation will receive an event T-shirt.

“Parkinson’s is the fastest-growing neurological disease,” said Teresa Bates, executive director of Edgemere. “This walk is a tremendous opportunity to bring the community together, raise awareness, and have a positive impact on the lives of individuals with this disease, as well as the family members who support them.”

According to a press release, every nine minutes someone is diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. With over 4,000 individuals in Dallas diagnosed, Edgemere’s recent designation as the first Certified Parkinson Disease Care community in Texas is highlighted by this new initiative.

“Our goal is to ensure all who are impacted by Parkinson’s know they have the support, resources and information needed to live well,” said Leisha Phipps, executive director of DAPS. “The DAPS community is committed to improving the lives of those impacted by Parkinson’s disease in North Texas.”

Those interested in attending the event can park at the P1 garage at Park Cities Baptist Church, 3933 Northwest Parkway, where a shuttle will take participants to Edgemere.
