Over the weekend, hundreds of Dallas ISD students participated in chess tournaments across the city. 

The Dallas ISD Student Activities Department hosted two spring chess tournaments. The Elementary Chess North competition took place at Thomas Jefferson High School, with 642 students in attendance from 55 schools. 

The second tournament, the Elementary Chess South competition, took place at Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy. There were 753 students from 63 campuses across the district in attendance for the May 10 tournament. Both tournaments were hosted for 3rd-5th graders across Dallas ISD. 

Here are the results from the competition at TJHS: 

3rd grade: 1st Place- Harry C. Withers Elementary, 2nd Place- Alex Sanger Prep School, 3rd Place- Downtown Montessori at Ida B. Wells Academy 

4th grade: 1st Place- William B. Travis Academy, 2nd Place- Mount Auburn Academy, 3rd Place- Walnut Hill International 

5th grade: 1st Place- Sudie TAG, 2nd Place- Lakewood Elementary, 3rd Place- George B. Dealy Academy 

Here are the results from the competition at BOMLA: 

3rd grade: 1st Place- Rosemont School, 2nd Place- Stemmons Elementary, 3rd Place- Frederick Douglass Elementary

4th grade: 1st Place- Albert C. Black Elementary, 2nd Place- Frederick Douglass Elementary, 3rd Place- Peeler Elementary

5th grade: 1st Place- Miller Elementary, 2nd Place- Peeler Elementary, 3rd Place- Kleberg Elementary

The district-wide tournaments are a chance for students to showcase their critical thinking skills and play chess in a safe and competitive environment. 

The next district tournament is May 17 for K-2 students at Conrad High School
