The Dallas City Council voted to extend Southwest Airlines’ lease on Wednesday from 2028 until September 2040 at Dallas Love Field (DAL).
The current lease expires in September 2028, and the new one will start a month later for 18 of the 20 gates at Love Field.
“I am proud to see Dallas extend its longstanding partnership with Southwest Airlines,” Dallas Mayor Eric L. Johnson said. “For over 50 years, Southwest has been the cornerstone of Dallas Love Field Airport and a key economic partner to our city,” he said.
The lease agreement ensures that the airport and airline can continue operating efficiently and serve Dallas residents and passengers across the country. The airport is the headquarters for Southwest and is the dominant airline at DAL.
“We applaud the leadership of Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson and City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert in helping secure Southwest’s long-term future at Dallas Love Field,” Bob Jordan, President, Chief Executive Officer & Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors at Southwest Airlines, said. “Our first flight took off from Love Field in 1971, and our purpose today is just as fulfilling as it was then—to connect people to what matters most in their lives with friendly, reliable, and low-cost air travel,” he said.
Love Field serves about 17 million passengers annually; demand is continuing to rise, and the extension will help support that growth.
