The Dallas Public Library is hosting a summer reading kick-off party and concert for SMART Summer on Saturday, May 31.
SMART Summer is a challenge for kids up to 18 to read, discover, and create from May 31 to Aug. 9.
The way it works is that for every 10 days they read or are read to, they can win a free book of their choice, up to three times over the summer. They can also complete 10 discovery activities and 10 create activities to earn a free food coupon, up to two times. Kids who complete 30 days of reading and complete the discovery, and create challenges by Aug. 9, will be entered into a grand prize drawing.
To join the challenge, you can sign up on dallaslibrary.beanstack.org and log your progress. All reading counts: books, magazines, comics, eBooks, and audiobooks. The challenge is not just for kids, as adults have their own separate challenges online.
The celebration on Saturday will feature local musicians and bands like Carly Carroll, TRVR?, and Brody Price. There will be plenty of food, drinks, and vendors for you to indulge in. If that wasn’t enough, there will also be watercoloring classes from Kelechi Art, free beer, and boozy popsicles.
The kick-off party is 18-plus only, and an ID is required at the check-in entrance.
If you want to celebrate summer reading, enjoy some local music, or all the food and drinks, the celebration will be at the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library on the first floor, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
This Summer Saturdays at Central event is brought to you with thanks by the Friends of the Dallas Public Library.
