To say that this spring season of lacrosee was a good one for ESD boys and girls lacrosse is an understatement. For just the second time in program history, the boys not only won the SPC title, but also the THSLL state title.
With the girls also securing the title of state champions, both the boys and girls got revenge on former opponents in their big games, Preston Hollow People reports.
The boys suddenly broke a tie in the 4th quarter against Highland Park in the TSHLL match and won 9-6.
“Throughout the year, a lot of the tough teams, we didn’t beat,” said first-year ESD boys coach Jay Sothoron. “We were a much different team at the end of the year.”
As former assistant coach for Division I Bellarime in Kentucky, Sothoron assumed the ESD lacrosse position with collegiate experience under his belt.
“We weren’t great at the beginning. It was quite a challenge,” said Sothoron, who credits his team for its patience and ability to learn from adversity. “Some of our players and parents were a little shocked when we lost the first game, but we never doubted one bit.”
This is the fifth TSHLL title for the boys since 2013. Additionally, The Eagles took the SPC title in April by plowing over St. Marks.
In the girls championship match, the Eagles flew past Kinkaid 14-8 with 6 of those goals coming from Jay Browne. This was an impressive performance. The girls barely got away from Kinkaid in the SPC match, winning it 11-10. With their only other state title earned in 2017, the future is bright.
