A few fellow sushi-lovers clued me into a hidden gem here in our neighborhood. The Sushi Bar is attached to the Clarion Hotel off LBJ Freeway—and from the exterior, it looks like the kind of place you might think twice about eating raw fish from. But alas, looks can be deceiving. Inside you’ll find a rather nice sushi bar with a sprawling dining room decked out in Japanese screens and cherry blossom floral arrangements.

My friend and I started our lunch there with the seafood goyza. These are tasty little rectangular seafood-filled dumplings that are lightly fried to crispy perfection and served with a sweet dipping sauce. There are several bento box lunch specials for $10 to $15, which my friend ordered. It came with sashimi, a sushi roll, salad, and fresh fruit—plenty of food for one person. We also sampled the spicy tuna tower, one of my favorites. This is a salad-like mixture of tuna, crabmeat, black caviar, and avocado in a spicy yet creamy sauce.

The real headline here, however, is the $1 sushi. They offer it all day everyday as long as you dine in. And unlike some other places that offer this deal, there is no minimum order required and they don’t skimp on the fish. I ordered a couple pieces, which were very good and fresh. If you want quality sushi at a steal, this is your place.

We didn’t have room for dessert, but the table next to us ordered some sort of cake topped with green ice cream and fresh fruit, which was tempting. The drink specials are also worth noting: Friday and Saturday nights they offer $2 sakes, $2.50 domestics, and $3 wells.
