Today I had the opportunity to preview the new Diego Rivera exhibition at the Meadows Museum—something I strongly recommend you check out.

I’m certainly no art aficionado, but I am fairly familiar with Rivera’s murals, especially after having lived in Mexico for several years. This exhibition, however, focuses on his lesser-known cubist portraits. Most of the works you’ll see were painted during World War I when he lived in Paris, mingling in vanguard art circles.

I’ll pass on a tip the curator shared with me: When you look at these paintings, get very close to them. There is some incredible detail in the texture that you’ll miss if you stand too far away.

Another tip to keep in mind: try to go see the exhibition on a Thursday night, when admission is free. The Rivera exhibition runs through September 20.
