NEIGHBORHOOD RESIDENT CHRISTINE COOK of Sleep Experts was named a service hero by the Dallas nonprofit Interfaith Housing Coalition for helping needy families through a mattress donation program. Cook has received several awards for her service and has volunteered with the coalition during other events and fundraisers.
THE DALLAS AREA PARKINSONISM SOCIETY will meet at 12:30 p.m. July 12 at University Park United Methodist Church, 4024 Caruth, for the annual July Jubilee Barbecue. FOUR PRESTON HOLLOW STUDENTS were among the 62 DISD high-school seniors to receive the Superintendent’s Scholarship worth $2,000. It was awarded to students who showed outstanding character and commitment to academics and community service. The recipients include Briane C. Anderson and Joseph Blatt of Hillcrest and Peter Brooke and Viet Thao Nguyen of W.T. White.
HILLCREST SENIOR AMANDA GROSS received a 2009-2010 Sulentic Family Foundation Scholarship for $20,000, awarded to DISD students who consistently demonstrate integrity, hard work and financial need.
CAROL WINGARD, a teacher at George Bannerman Dealy International Academy, is one of 46 teachers nationwide participating in the LiftOff Summer Institute at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. She’ll join other educators in workshops, projects and experiments, sharing innovative lesson plan ideas.
W.T. WHITE SCIENCE TEACHER JASON WALLACE was among the seven DISD teachers honored with a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Teaching Award. It was created by the Texas Instruments Foundation to recognize innovative science in the classroom in grades six through 12.
W.T. WHITE STUDENT SAVANNAH SMITH won the gold medal at the Texas Rowing Championship’s 1,000-meter event. Smith, along with her Highland Park team, won by more than six seconds over the Texas Rowing Club of Austin and the Austin Rowing Club.
