In 2008, Thomas Jefferson High School ranked at No. 19 out of the 22 comprehensive high schools in DISD. This year, it’s No. 1.

This is according to the district’s School Effectiveness Indicators, measuring improvements in TAKS scores. Neighborsgo reports that the quick growth came from new programs with a more intense focus on standardized testing. The schools saw enormous gains after starting the Patriot Academy after-school homework program that has taken homework completion from 40 percent to 90 percent. TJ also has expanded ESL programs and incorporated Campus Advisory Time to establish stronger relationships between teachers and students.
