You’ve been hearing a lot about the Hillcrest Lacrosse team here on the blog (games, tryouts, etc.). Over the weekend, the team took the DII State Championship title, defeating Clear Lake 13-11. This is the team’s first state championship in 16 years.

Here’s the recap from Hillcrest dad David Look:

“Hillcrest jumped to an early lead 2-1 in the first quarter and extended that lead to 7-2 at halftime. Clear Lake came out of the halftime break and quickly shut down Hillcrest and tied the game at 7 at the end of the third quarter. Hillcrest regained its composure in the fourth quarter, notching three quick goals within a minute’s time to lead 10-7. The teams traded goals the remainder of the game. Hillcrest’s Trevor Atkins (Colgate) notched 3 of his 7 goals for the day in the fourth quarter. Clear Lake made a strong push at the end, however numerous saves by the Hillcrest goalie Ward Weber (Indiana) cemented the victory.

After the game, Hillcrest Coach Bill Elliott remarked ‘This game was the game of runs. Clear Lake was laying it on us. I told the team after Clear Lake tied it up at the third that they have 12 more minutes – if they want it, they have to go get it … and they did. I asked them if they thought it was worth it and now that they have won it, they think it was. I am proud of our boys and our opponents from Clear Lake.’ ”

Trevor Atkins (#10) made 7 Goals and won Overall MVP. Ward Weber (#0) had 15 saves and won Defensive MVP.

Before the state finals, coach Bill Elliott, a longtime Preston Hollow resident, was elected Texas High School Lacrosse League Coach of the Year.

Congratulations, Hillcrest Lacrosse!
