The Betabeles salad with roasted beets is also a good starter choice and has yummy guajillo viniagrette.

One thing’s for sure – this ain’t El Fenix. The owners of the long-time Dallas institution launched a new concept, MesoMaya, about five or six weeks ago at Preston and Forest, featuring authentic Mexican cuisine (as opposed to Tex-Mex).

Don’t get me wrong – I love a $4.99 Wednesday enchilada special from El Fenix. But MesoMaya is in a league all its own.

First off, they have about 11 different margaritas such as the Serrano Berry Rita, which includes muddled strawberries and Serrano pepper for a nice little kick. If you’re watching your sugar intake, try La Flaca, an organic “skinny” margarita that still doesn’t skimp on sweet taste.

For an appetizer, start with the Ceviche Mixto, a light and fresh salsa that combines shrimp and fish cooked with lime juice, chopped avocado, tomatoes, cilantro and onions served with chips.

You can’t go wrong with the restaurant’s signature dish, Budin Azteca, which is almost like a cross between an enchilada and lasagna. The multi-layer cheesy tortilla dish comes topped with a roasted tomatillo sauce that’s so good, you could eat it by itself with a spoon.

Save room for the Pastel De Moras, a bake blueberry cake/cobbler with a scoop of Henry’s Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream. It’s hailed as the best dessert on the menu.

Those are just a few of MesoMaya’s home-run dishes. There’s also things like tamales, bass with mango relish, marinated steak and hearty Mexican soups just to name a few. Most items run about $10-$18 each.
