One day is hardly enough to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. Thankfully, SMU will keep the celebration going through Jan. 21.
On Jan. 20 head to Hughes-Trigg Commons for the Commemorative Unity Walk. It begins at noon.
Later that evening, at 5:30 p.m., hear Alicia Garza’s thoughts on social justice in the age of the Internet. Considering she’s the founder of the Black Lives Matter movement, which was born of a hashtag, she should have plenty to say. Her lecture takes place in the Hughes-Trigg Ballroom and is free to attend.
On Thursday, Jan. 21, catch a screening of “Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin.” Though Rustin was a prominent organizer of the 1962 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, he stayed behind the scenes to avoid drawing attention to his homosexuality. This screening takes place at 1:30 p.m. in the Hughes-Trigg Forum and is sponsored by SMU’s Women & LGBT Center.
