Teachers from two neighborhood schools have been recognized as Dallas ISD’s Teacher of the Year finalists.

Iván Medina, a fifth-grade math and science dual language teacher at Marcus Leadership Academy, is one of the finalists for the elementary category. Born and raised in Dallas, Medina was the first member of his family to graduate from high school and college, according to the The Hub.

Two other educators from César Chávez Learning Center and Umphrey Lee Elementary are also finalists in the elementary category.

Nancy Salas, a seventh- and eighth-grade career & technology teacher at Henry W. Longfellow Career Exploration Academy, is one of the choice school category finalists. She is a Dallas ISD alumna and started out in education as a substitute teacher six years ago.

Salas is one of two educators in the choice category alongside a teacher from School for the Talented and Gifted in Pleasant Grove.
