The St. Mark’s School of Texas’ academic team has scored high marks in two notable competitions in recent weeks.

The run began over Memorial Day weekend, as the team traveled to Atlanta for the High School National Championship Tournament. A National Academic Quiz Tournaments LLC competition, the tournament gathers the top quiz bowl teams in the nation to test their knowledge on science, literature, history, fine arts, geography, philosophy and the social sciences.

One of 304 teams competing, the team came in eighth place overall. Coached by Paul Mlakar and Bruce Westgate, the team was made up of five juniors: co-captains Arnav Lahoti and Aditya Shivaswamy, along with Vardhan Agnihotri, Ethan Bosita and Sohum Sukhatankar.

Next, the team headed to Chicago in early June for the PACE (Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence) National Scholastic Championship. Another quiz bowl competition similar to the HSNCT, the team placed fifth out of 72 teams.

According to the St. Mark’s website, the team’s success can be attributed to the “the rigor of the St. Mark’s curriculum and the school’s dedication to creating an environment of loving learning.”
