You may have heard by now that Texas congressman and Hillcrest alum Colin Allred is running for state senate against incumbent senator Ted Cruz.

Allred had a less conventional path into politics ahead of becoming the congressman for the 32nd District of Texas in 2019. He played in the NFL for the Tennessee Titans for four seasons before studying law and becoming a civil rights attorney.

In 2018, he unseated Pete Sessions for the 32nd District of Texas congressional seat. In a recent piece by Vanity Fair, writer Chris Smith profiled Allred on his next move.

According to the article, Allred decided to run against Cruz due to the senator’s response to the January 6 Capitol riot and his time spent on podcasts. He also addressed his Cancun vacation.

“He has become mostly a media figure,” Allred told Vanity Fair. “He’s podcasting three times a week. He’s a constant presence on Fox News. He’s a content machine, but he’s not a legislative machine.”

The publication also points out comparisons between Allred and previous senators challenger Beto O’Rourke. Where the focus was more on O’Rourke during the election, Allred aims to keep both a local focus and focus on Cruz as an incumbent.

The Democratic Party will make their nomination in March. So far, Allred’s opponent is Democratic Texas senator Roland Guttierez, who represents District 19.
