The recent historical sculpture in Anderson Bonner Park that honored a former slave has been vandalized earlier this week.

On Tuesday, the sculpture for Anderson Bonner, located in the park of his namesake, was damaged in an attempted theft. The marker is a copper medallion in the park and now shows a crack down his face.

According to an interview with WFAA, the short-term plan for the damage is to fill in the crack while another medallion is made. The Office of Arts and Culture will work with the Dallas police to open an investigation into the vandalism.

Last year, the city approved the marker and other commissions that celebrate Black history in Dallas. Dr. Cooper was born into slavery around 1840 and later owned 2,000 acres of farmland around White Rock Creek.
