Highlighting District 1

Some of you may remember that earlier this school year, Dr. Dawna Duke, the principal at Thomas C. Marsh Preparatory Academy, received her bus driver’s license to make school trips more accessible for her students. Now, that goal is a reality, as Principal Duke is taking 30 students on a camping trip to Cooper Lake, where they will experience hiking, fishing or kayaking for the first time.

Congratulations to Virginia Ross (W.T. White), Lizette Rincon (Prestonwood Montessori), Dee Pier (Anne Frank Elementary) and Emma Lloyd (Withers Elementary) for receiving the Junior League grant of up to $2,500 each. Each teacher will use their grant for projects ranging from robotic sensors to creating STEM stations for Pre-K students.

Thanksgiving meals for students

From Monday, Nov. 20, through Friday, Nov. 24, Dallas ISD will be closed for Thanksgiving break. However, to ensure that all our students have access to nutritious food during this time, some schools will continue to provide free meals for children younger than 18 and students up to 21 years old with disabilities. To find a school location near you, visit www.Dallasisd.org/FCNS.

Homeless month

November is Homeless Youth Awareness Month, and the district’s Homeless Education Program (HEP) is working hard to help families and students in this situation connect with vital resources like food, counseling, transportation, uniforms, and much more. Throughout this month, HEP is hosting multiple events to raise community awareness and funds to help students and families in need. To learn more about HEP and the activities planned for this month, visit www.dallasisd.org/HEP.

Discovering opportunities in Dallas ISD

Trustee Edwin Flores, District 1

Earlier this month, Dallas ISD hosted one of its flagship events: Discover Dallas ISD. This was a fantastic opportunity to learn about the excellent programs our district has to offer, and it serves to kick-start the application period for the district’s choice programs for the next school year. As you all know, Dallas ISD has over 100 choice schools and programs available, including P-TECH, International Baccalaureate, single-gender schools, Montessori programs, and many more.

For more information about the programs offered and how to find the best-fit school for your children, visit www.dallasisd.org/choosedallasisd, or for Spanish, www.dallasisd.org/descubre.
