Yesterday property owners began the final demolition at the site formerly known as Valley View Mall.

According to a press release from the City of Dallas, in November 2022 the city issued a letter to the property owners requiring the demolition of the site by June 1, 2023.

Valley View Mall was bought by developers in 2012, closed in 2015, and the first demolition began in 2017. The site has been vacant for over a decade.

Developers bought the lot with plans to turn it into the Dallas International District. The site would be a part of the 445-acre area that would become a  live-work-play district, complete with residences, a park, a Dallas ISD school, and retail and office spaces, among other amenities.

“This demolition is long overdue for the community,” said Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson. “As we have seen, the former mall structure was a blight and a hazard for our public safety personnel. Dallas deserves safe structures, a strong International District, and a vibrant new development on the site of the former Valley View Mall. This is a major step forward on every front.”

Valley View Mall has been the victim of a series of fires; one in Feb. and one in March leaving two firefighters injured. Both fires are undetermined and still being investigated by Dallas Fire-Rescue. Dallas Police Department has notified the property owner that Valley View Mall will be designated a habitual criminal property. DPD expects a final decision by the end of this month.

District 11 City Council Member Jaynie Schultz said, “With today’s demolition of the remaining structure of Valley View Mall, we turn the page on this long dormant property and safety hazard in our community. We look ahead to transforming the area, including as part of the planned Dallas International District”.

Dallas City Manager T.C. Broadnax said, “It is always our practice to work toward a constructive resolution that serves the residents of Dallas. I want to make sure to thank the community for not giving up on us and to the team for their commitment to getting this done”.

The final demolition of Valley View Mall is expected to be completed by June 1, 2023.
