One bite of chicken cacciatore during lunch at Lover’s Pizza will make you wonder if the $6.50 price is a menu misprint. It’s not — the food really is that good and worth every penny. If you ask managers Dino and Timmy what makes their food so tasty, they’ll tell you it’s “authentic Italian” — a quality that’s hard to dispute given their unmistakable accents. The cousins who run the Lover’s restaurants in Dallas call northern home, and most of the recipes are passed down from their mothers. The recipe for the homemade marinara sauce is a family secret, as is the recipe for the house Italian dressing — a creamy tomato concoction with hints of fresh garlic. Forget the usual balsamic vinegar base. “That’s fast Italian,” says Giovanni, one of the cousins. “This is good Italian.” The other reason their food tastes so good is that it’s made daily from scratch. One bite of the goat cheese pizza with sun-dried tomatoes, grilled chicken and spinach will convince you.
