Disabled American Veterans Big D Chapter 57 meets every first Saturday at 1 p.m. at 8630 Thurgood Lane for discussions and lunch. Meetings include various activities, presenters and topics. The SPCA of Texas runs an injured animal rescue ambulance service to help strays. SPCA will respond to calls in our neighborhood from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. daily. Field officers will evaluate injured animals and take them to the SPCA, Highland Park Animal Clinic or an emergency clinic for treatment. 214.651.7387.

Casa de Vida is a respite care program for caregivers of early onset Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Group meetings begin Tuesday, Aug. 28, at NorthPark Presbyterian Church, 9555 N. Central Expwy. The program is offered weekly Tuesdays from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. It’s strictly a social program, with no medications or health care administered. Activities include morning snacks, exercise, bingo, crafts and music. $10 fee applies; application required. W.T. White High School students recently competed in the Winston Science Fair at Fair Park. About 21,000 participants competed in the fair’s 66 events over the course of 20 days. W.T. White students won awards in several events including Adventures in Duct Tape, Forensics Workshop and Competition, Numbers Competition, Power Point Competition and Trash to Treasure.

Hillcrest High School students recently competed in the Academic Decathlon regional competition. The school placed third in the region behind Highland Park and J.J. Pearce.  In addition, the school placed second in the Superquiz total competition and first in the Superquiz relay portion. Math honors went to Burke Hall, gold; Mattia Flabiano, bronze; and Jeremy Dickie, bronze. Music honors went to Ana Olivares, bronze; and Jeremy Dickie, bronze. Economics honors went to Burke Hall, silver; Kate Kitsumritphol, bronze; Chelsee Cox, bronze; and Claire Lindsey, silver. Science honors went to Burke Hall, bronze. Literature honors went to Kate Kitsumritphol, bronze; and Jeremy Dickie, silver. Art honors went to Burke Hall, silver. Those athletes include offense players Jefferey Miller, senior; Michael Harrison, junior; Brandon Cason, senior; Carlos Estrella, senior; Abraham Juarez, junior; and defense players Ryan Calendar, junior; Rob Look, senior; Stetson Edwards, senior.

Walnut Hill Elementary was named to SMART Technologies list of showcase schools across North America. Showcase schools and districts are leaders in the adoption and use of technology that improves student learning outcomes and teacher effectiveness. There are more than 70 showcase schools in the , but Walnut Hill is the first one in Dallas ISD to be honored.

Hillcrest High School students recently were named to the All City Band. Band members include senior Kirstie Wall, clarinet; sophomore Daisy Hernandez, clarinet; and junior Ben Debus, baritone saxophone.

An online tutoring service is being offered on the Dallas Public Library’s website, tailored for students grades 4-12. The service is free to all holders of a DPL library card. The service can be accessed by visiting dallaslibrary.org and clicking DASH.

CONTACT Crisis Line is seeking volunteers to help callers through some of their life’s most critical moments. Those interested will be taught crisis management techniques, will develop their listening skills, and will enhance their interactions with family, friends and co-workers. Assistance League of Dallas is a volunteer group dedicated to assisting the elderly, children, and the abused. Volunteers work in structured and established programs for Children’s Medical Center, Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center, and Dallas ISD. Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) at the Senior Source is looking for volunteers age 55+ to volunteer with more than 230 non-profit agencies in Dallas and Collin counties.
