As the DISD District 1 race nears its Nov. 3 finish line, candidates have not-so-surprisingly become more vocal about their disapproval of incumbent Edwin Flores’ performance. Homemaker and non-practicing pediatrician Kyle Renard has said he’s out of touch with the challenges facing District 1; freelance writer Linus Spiller agrees; and retired salesmen Melvin Cannon claims Flores neglects the special education programs.

A little mud flinging is expected in any race, but it’s some of Renard’s recent comments in this Dallas Morning News story that have some District 1 parents raising their eyebrows. She recently said that right now, she thinks there’s a degree of “risk” for parents who enroll their kids in neighborhood public schools. Renard’s children have attended private schools and DISD magnet schools, but as Flores points out, none of her children have attended District 1 schools.

This will be the first time Renard challenges Flores for his seat. Spiller and Cannon both faced him in the last election and lost.
