Preston Hollow Elementary students sing the "Star Spangled Banner" Tuesday night during the Veterans Day program.

Things have been busy for students and teachers at Preston Hollow Elementary. Here’s a round-up of what’s gone on this week:

I had the privilege of serving as a judge for the school’s annual Chili Cook-off Tuesday night. Teachers prepared their own, special recipes while the kids came up with witty names for the spicy concoctions (my favorites: Sleep Alone Chili and Atomic After Burn). Overall winner: Silly Chili No. 1.

Later that evening, everyone convened in the auditorium for the Veterans Day program, where children represented the different branches of the military and paid tribute to our servicemen and women through song and xylophone performance.

Preston Hollow students also have been giving back to the community, adopting the downtown SPCA animal shelter as their service project through SLANT 45 Kids Bowl Bash, participating under the name Preston Hollow PetPals. So far, they’ve collected hundreds of dollars in cash and supplies

for homeless animals. The kids also made a collage that is being considered for display at NorthPark DFW Airport and the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History. SLANT (Service Learning Adventures in North Texas) is program for elementary student groups, and if they complete all the requirements, they could be part of an event at Cowboys Stadium in January.

There are only a few days left to buy poinsettias from the PTA for the holiday season. You shop and purchase online through the PTA website.
