For many of us, the well-intentioned New Year’s resolutions we made last month to work out more and eat less are beginning to wane. So what does it really take to sustain an active lifestyle? Two new fitness studios opening soon in Preston Hollow offer the tools you need to do just that.
After spending more than a decade working in the fitness industry, Bryan Whatley is convinced there’s a better way for people to achieve their fitness goals. He believes personalized workout plans, nutrition and highly qualified personal trainers are integral for achieving results for clients.
Whatley is the founder of NexGen Fitness, which is set to open a new location on the southwest corner of Preston and Royal this month. He has a bachelor of science degree from the University of Oklahoma in exercise physiology and is a certified personal trainer through the distinguished National Strength and Conditioning Association.
Each NexGen trainer boasts a similar level of expertise. They use their knowledge to design fitness programs for each client based on their goals and abilities to guarantee results.
“The education of our staff sets us apart,” Whatley says.
NexGen programs include a variety of fun and energizing workouts, such as resistance training, CrossFit, kickboxing and more. The fitness studio also offers NexGen Ignite™, a free, customized cardio program where clients use a treadmill, elliptical machine or a stationary bike to measure their anaerobic threshold.
“The cardio program helps us show each client where they burn fat as opposed to sugar for energy,” Whatley says. “From that, we design a 16-week progressive program with personalized speed, incline and time limits, taking all of the guesswork out of the equation.”
Another way NexGen keeps workouts individualized is through limiting training group size to four people.
Rather than requiring monthly fees that some other gyms have, NexGen clients pay for one-on-one training, couples training or group training in their own private suite.
“Other gyms offer personal training, but it’s out on an open gym floor,” Whatley says.
“At NexGen, we train clients in private suites, offering a better workout. The privacy we offer helps clients feel less self-conscious and minimizes distractions.”
Time isn’t wasted taking turns on shared machines, for every private training studio is fully stocked with its own fitness equipment. The small group size and one-on-one training allows trainers to focus on individual needs.
The training studio also offers access to a registered dietician. Recently, NexGen developed a free mobile app called NexGen Nutrition. Clients log food and exercise, and trainers can track progress and advise clients in real time, even outside of training hours.
“Although we primarily focus on personalized workouts, nutrition and cardio are equally as important to overall fitness,” Whatley says. “We look at every aspect of fitness, not just the workout.”
Whatley says years have gone into developing the mobile app and cardio program at NexGen.
“We’ve spent time on this because I know that it will help our clients to achieve their goals.”
Another fitness studio that’s brand new to the neighborhood is set to open in Preston Hollow Village in March.
Orangetheory Fitness offers 60-minute group interval workout sessions split into intervals of cardiovascular and strength training with heart rate monitors to track intensity and maximize metabolic burn.
That’s according to Xan Carr, business development manager at Orangetheory Fitness.
“At Orangetheory, clients will increase their energy, see visible results, and burn more calories — even after leaving the studio,” he says.
The fitness studio’s workout is broken into intervals of cardiovascular and strength training, using a variety of top-of-the-line equipment, including treadmills, rowing machines, suspension training and free weights.
Sessions are open to all adults and teens, ages 16 and older. All fitness levels are welcome as the fitness program is specifically designed for everyone from power walkers to elite performance athletes.
“If weight loss is your goal, you can expect to see an estimated loss of three to five pounds per week attending three to five sessions per week,” Carr says.
“If performance is your goal, you can expect to see an increase in power, speed and strength after your first two weeks of attending two to four sessions per week.”
Orangetheory Fitness has been featured in the New York Times as a plateau-busting workout in which participants can burn up to 900 calories per session. Backed by the science of post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), Orangetheory’s heart rate-monitored training is designed to keep heart rates in a target zone that stimulates metabolism and increases energy.
The fitness center dubs the resulting increase in energy, visible toning and post-workout calorie burn as the “orange effect.”
Another way Orangetheory keeps the energy up is by offering group training. Highly qualified and motivational personal trainers provide a safe and effective workout.
Orangetheory’s philosophy is that the well-rounded movements and pace direction offered in a group setting lead to better results.
“Working out with a group is fun and effective, not to mention the added motivation, endurance, support and accountability,” Carr says.
“People who workout in groups stick to their goals more consistently than those who workout alone.”
