The lunchtime line often reaches out the door of Hopdoddy, the “gourmet” burger bar known for its made-from-scratch buns, house-ground, hormone-free meats and organic produce. Flip the menu over, though, and you’ll see that the drink list is no afterthought. The restaurant applies the same philosophy to its cocktails and adult milkshakes. “The whole idea behind it is to source as many local spirits as possible,” says manager Ben del Castillo. Most of the liquor comes from Texas. Lemons and limes are squeezed fresh daily, and all the syrups are made in-house. The menu includes a few different margaritas, including the classic “doble fina” and the “lil’ prick,” a prickly pear martini. For the milkshakes, Hopdoddy churns its own ice cream on site, adding a hint of cinnamon to every batch, including the popular Nutella chocolate pretzel shake. Other varieties rotate on and off the menu with the seasons, or sometimes pairing with the burger special.

1. Liberty Burger

The selection of adult shakes varies by location, but ours features at least three decadent drinks worth trying. The Lebowski resembles a White Russian with cream custard, Patron XO Café and a sprinkle of coffee on top.

2. Snuffer’s Restaurant and Bar

The “Snufferita” is stronger than your average margarita, so one is all you need. The sweet-and-tart cocktail is made with a mixture of tequila and a Mexican brandy.
