The Park Forest Branch Library will become an incubator for experimentation this Saturday, Jan. 9.

Children between the ages of 8 and 13-years-old are invited to design and build a mechanical arm at 2:00 p.m. If all goes according to plan, these fabricated limbs will be able to lift small items.

The event is sponsored by the PBS series, SciGirls, which hopes to get tween girls interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

Kid-centered STEM initiatives are all the rage in our neighborhood (and the nation). Atmos Energy regularly hosts a STEM story time for preschoolers at Bookmarks, and Hockaday recently unveiled the Kosmos Energy STEM Teacher Institute. Pretty soon Preston Hollow will be swarmed with aspiring engineers.
