Watch Ursuline grad Melinda French Gates appear on Oprah’s “SuperSoul Sunday,” and you can see that she is infused with thoughtfulness and “serviam,” Ursuline’s mission. Gates talks about her New Year’s resolutions. Each year she commits to a word to define her goal for the next 12 months. In the past, she chose “gentle” to fight perfectionism and “spacious” to make room for things in her life. In 2018, she chose “grace” in order to be a part of something bigger than herself. In 2019, she told Oprah she felt vulnerable to reveal that her word is “shine.” “What ‘shine’ means to me is that every single person has a light inside of them. And if we can turn that light on behalf of women, on behalf of people who don’t have as much, on behalf of minorities in our own country. If we stand up for what’s right, we will break through all these barriers.”
