Summer time is around the corner, and it’s the perfect time to take a break and relax. You might be amazed to know just how much knowledge students can lose over the summer unless they continue actively learning.

To help prevent summer loss, Dallas ISD is partnering with the city of Dallas, libraries and nonprofits throughout the city to offer hundreds of summer programs and enrichment opportunities for students of all ages.

The summer camps and learning opportunities will reinforce what students learned during the school year through hands-on and enriching fun activities. The camps will also help students to stay safe and productively engaged during their summer break.

The summer activities will range from dance, sports, band and leadership camps, to robotics, reading and art programs. Families can learn about and register students for these and other free activities at the Discover Summer Fair set for 9 a.m. to noon, Sat., April 27, at Billy Earl Dade Middle School, 2727 Al Lipscomb Way.

Some of the programs to be offered in the District 1 area include:

  • A Newcomer Summer Program, designed for recent English language learners will take place at George H. W. Bush, Jerry Junkins, and Herbert Marcus elementary schools, from June 10 through June 27. Through hands-on and fun activities, the program will help students to adapt faster to a new educational system.
  • From June 3 to June 27, Nathan Adams, F. P. Caillet, Tom C. Gooch and Herbert Marcus elementary schools will offer a Prekindergarten Summer Camp. Students will have the opportunity to engage in meaningful learning experiences in a very positive culture and climate.
  • Students will be able to participate in real-world, hands-on activities that focus on STEM-related coursework, including investigations, engineering tasks, experiments, and engaging problem-solving. The one-week STEM Camp  will take place in June at Nathan Adams, Jerry Junkins, and Harry C. Withers elementary schools. Exact dates will vary per campus.
  • Anne Frank and Walnut Hill elementary schools will offer a Science Discovery Camp starting June 10 through June 18. The camp is designed to provide engaging, hands-on science learning opportunities for students entering grades 3-8.

All summer programs are free of cost. To learn about this and other summer program opportunities around Dallas ISD, visit dallasisd.org/discoversummer.  These are just a few of the more than 100 options, which Dallas ISD students will have during the summer months. Registration is based on a first-come, first-served basis. Enrollment dates vary per program and campus. I encourage you to contact the school offering the program that peaks your interest.
