Summer meals to keep Dallas children strong and healthy this summer

Another successful school year comes to an end in Dallas ISD. With the end of this school year, we bid farewell to Dr. Michael Hinojosa as our superintendent and welcome Dr. Stephanie Elizalde to the position. Please join me in thanking Dr. Hinojosa for his many years of service to Dallas ISD and the amazing improvements for students.  Over the many years that I have served as trustee for District 1, I have worked closely with Dr. Hinojosa to achieve the transformation of our district and lay the foundation for the future. I look forward to working with Dr. Elizalde as she begins her tenure as our superintendent.  She returns to Dallas ISD with the knowledge and skills necessary to continue our work to make Dallas ISD a premier urban school district in the country.

I would also like to thank our excellent teachers and campus staff for all the hard work they have done over the past year. When our schools reopened for in-person education last fall, we were unsure how to tackle the unfinished learning left by the pandemic. Thanks to the hard work and determination of our excellent teachers and staff, our students are recovering some of that time and learning. While we still have a lot of work to do, I am proud of their work for the students they serve.

School Calendar

Since all District 1 schools operate under the base calendar, the first day of school for the 2022-2023 school year will be Aug. 15.  Intersession calendar schools will begin on Aug. 8.  The five schools operating under the School Day Redesign calendar will start on Aug. 1. Remember that some adjustments have been made to the school hours for next year. The projected school day for elementary schools will span from 8 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., middle schools from 8:35 a.m. to 3:55 p.m., and high schools from 9:10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Summer in Dallas ISD

To update the 1:1 device program, all students were asked to return their assigned electronic devices, accessories, and chargers to their school before the summer break. Devices not turned in by the end of the school year will be disabled. In July, parents or guardians will need to complete a new permission form, and students will receive their new devices at the beginning of the school year. Families can call the IT help desk for more information at (972) 925-5630.

During June and July, students in Pre-K through high school will be able to partake in fun summer learning activities and other enrichment activities. As part of the district’s free summer school programs, students will have a chance to connect with their peers, accelerate learning, and improve their social and emotional well-being. To learn more, visit www.dallasisd.org/summerlearning.

To ensure that all students stay nourished during the break, children younger than 18 and students up to 21 years old with disabilities are invited to enjoy healthy summer meals at no cost. Starting June 6, selected Dallas ISD schools will serve meals on site Monday through Thursday. Breakfast is from 7 to 9 a.m., and lunch is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. To learn more, visit www.dallasisd.org/fcns.

Congratulations are in order

Finally, big kudos to Eira Lopez Amaya and Alejandra Zavala from Thomas Jefferson High School, and Hannah Rodriguez, from W.T. White High School, for being awarded Dallas ISD Superintendent’s Scholarships. Each of them will receive $3,000 to continue their college education.
