After the 2019 tornado, Thomas Jefferson High School was one of many damaged buildings. Now, three years later, it’s been renovated and is nearly ready for classes.

Dallas ISD Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde took a tour of the campus. The new campus now has bigger windows, a bigger library and reconstructed hallways.

“It’s really difficult to get through a physical facade that doesn’t always appear welcoming,” Elizalde told Dallas Morning News. “Now, we’re going to have a building that reflects the true heart of what’s inside this brick and mortar.”

Over the past few years, there had been calls to tear down the school as rein leaked through holes in the roof and cats congregated around the school. Windows were boarded up and students relied on other spaces in the community for support.

Instead of demolishing the school, the Dallas ISD school board voted to renovate it.
