Campuses reopen after 2019 tornado

Welcome back, District 1, to a new year at Dallas ISD. I hope you all had a restful and healthy winter break, and I am looking forward to exciting opportunities for all of us in the months ahead.

TJ and Walnut Hill are back in our neighborhood

On Jan. 9, Thomas Jefferson High School and Walnut Hill Leadership Academy reopened their doors and welcomed their students to their new campus.

It was great to see students return to the brand-new school and classrooms that they now call home. There was an electric excitement among the community and all in Dallas who witnessed the destruction caused by the tornado on that October 2019 night.

The rebuilding of these two schools also speaks to the greater trust our community has in our bond work to mirror the quality teaching we pride ourselves in and to give students in every neighborhood a level playing field to learn. For decades, this will be a place students want to attend, just like many other newly renovated buildings in Dallas ISD.

I invite you all to TJ High School to celebrate this special moment on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 3-6 p.m.

MLK Oratory finalists named

It’s nearly time for one of the district’s signature events, the annual MLK Oratory Competition. I’d like to congratulate Ella Atkins, a fifth grader from Walnut Hill International Leadership Academy, for being selected as one of the eight finalists for the competition, which will be held on Jan. 13, 2023, at W.H. Adamson High School. This year, the students composed an original speech on the topic “What Would Dr. King Say to Us Today About Hope for Tomorrow.” Good luck, Ella, and all the contestants.

Choice school application period

The application period for the district’s choice programs will be open until Jan. 31. Dallas ISD offers families a wide variety of options to choose from, with over 100 choice schools and programs offered in our neighborhood and choice schools. Visit www.dallasisd.org/choosedallasisd for more information about our academic offerings and find the best-fit school for your child.

2023 STEM Expo

On Saturday, Feb. 4, we invite district families to participate in Dallas ISD’s 2023 STEM Expo. This year the event will be held in person at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center. Don’t miss this opportunity for students and families to engage in over 100 fun and academic experiences, with hands-on exhibits in science, technology, engineering, and math. January is Board Recognition Month

As part of School Board Recognition Month, I would like to recognize my fellow trustees on the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees. As board members, we create policies for public schools and serve as a link between the community and the district. It is an honor to work with my fellow trustees to improve the lives and education of our students at Dallas ISD!
