Before Mark Cuban became the billionaire and Mavs owner everyone knows today, he was just getting by.

In an episode of the Club Random podcast with Bill Maher, Cuban recounts how he saved money on groceries when he was tight on cash.

The topic came up when host Maher mentioned when he was poor, he couldn’t afford to eat what he wanted. When he was in his 20s, groceries were cheaper closer to closing time than at peak store hours, according to Cuban.

“I used to go to the grocery store at midnight because they lowered the price of chicken and these big French fries to $1.29, and I would buy a bunch of them.”

Now, the process isn’t so straightforward, but some grocery stores do have days where items are marked down significantly. Wednesday tends to be a markdown day for many stores, according to Instacart.
