Earlier this month, I was honored by Governor Greg Abbott to be reappointed as a member of the Texas School Safety Center Board. Among other things, the center helps provide safety and security information through research, training, and technical assistance for schools in Texas, as well as helping build partnerships with students, families, schools, communities, and law enforcement agencies in the state.

In light of the incident that struck our community at Thomas Jefferson High School last month, it is important that we review our safety protocols and strengthen them where they are needed. Our schools need to continue to be safe havens where our students and staff can learn, grow and succeed. As a member of the Texas School Safety Center Board, I will do my best to expand best practices, training resources, and ideas to improve school safety for all our children.

Pre-K enrollment season is here

Are you ready to be part of our Pre-K family? April 1 marks the beginning of the enrollment period for Pre-K children for the 2023-2024 school year. Children who attend Pre-K have a solid start to their education as they learn how to socialize with their peers, manage their emotions, and get the foundational skills to boost their learning potential. To better assist our families, we will have several events to provide information about our programs and help them enroll. Learn more about these opportunities at www.dallasisd.org/prek.

Pledging a path to the future

Nearly 100 P-TECH students from five schools offering the education pathway–including 31 from our very own W.T. White–signed “letters of intent” earlier this year, assuring them a teaching job in the district after they earn their bachelor’s degree and teaching certifications. This takes a lot of pressure off our students, knowing that they have a job with at least a $60,000 salary right after graduation from college.

Neighborhood schools welcome you

On April 6, Dallas ISD celebrated its Neighborhood Schools Night Out, highlighting all the great opportunities and programs that neighborhood schools have for their families, from a variety of extracurricular activities and championship athletics to innovative programs such as dual language, STEM/STEAM, Montessori and more! If you didn’t get an opportunity to enroll your student that night, don’t worry, you still have time.
