Dallas police have arrested a teenager suspected of shooting Preston Hollow security guard Adalberto Santiago to death last week.

DPD announced today (Wednesday, May 31) that authorities arrested 17-year-old Antwon Osborne in Nevada on May 23, four days after the incident that left the 34-year-old security worker dead.

Police suspect that Osborne was breaking into cars in Preston Center when Santiago confronted him.

A witness said Santiago fought briefly with a suspect in the 8200 block of Westchester before being shot. Paramedics transported Santiago to a nearby hospital where he died from his injuries.

The witness told Fox4 he tried to help Santiago and stayed with him until “that last gasp.”

The witness said he saw the security guard get in his car and go to the suspect. About 30 seconds later he heard four shots. He saw suspect vehicle, a Toyota Camry, leaving the scene. The witness called 911 and stayed with the bleeding, barely conscious man until paramedics arrived, “talking to him the entire time,” according to the TV news report.

The witness says he and the victim were casual friends who greeted one another regularly in the Preston Center parking lot, that they referred to one another as hermano or brother. The witness also said he believes Santiago was carrying a gun that day, something police have not confirmed.

The day after the shooting, police located an abandoned vehicle used in the crime in a N. Cockrell Hill Road shopping center.

Police said suspect Osborne is “in the process of being extradited” to Dallas from Nevada.

In Texas, anyone who commits a crime after turning 17 is treated as an adult in the criminal justice system. Texas is one of just three states that charges 17-year-olds as adults, according to the Texas Center for Justice + Equity.
