A San Antonio-based cafe and bakery will soon move into the space formerly occupied by Natalie’s Restaurant at the southwest corner of Preston and Royal. Tootie Pie Company specializes in homemade pies, derived from the talents of Ruby Lorraine “Tootie” Feagan who in 2004 sold her little shop in Medina, Texas. It has been growing ever since with locations in San Antonio, Austin, Fredericksburg, Frisco and now Dallas.

The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, offering authentic New York bagels, paninis, BLTs, soups and other cafe food. But the focus is on dessert, says president and CEO Don Merrill.

“We want to give people a dessert experience. So many restaurants don’t put much effort into dessert.”

One item in particular is the pie on a stick. Sometime this May, it will be featured on the Food Network’s “Kid in a Candy Store”.

Tootie’s also sells its pies in South Texas grocery stores and here locally at Neiman Marcus. You can also order frozen but fully baked pies for delivery.

The cafe is set to open by June.
