Creating a high tech, visually attractive home theater came with plenty of challenges for homeowner Nicholas Wood. Along with tackling his ambitious dream of enjoying movie theater quality sound from the seat of his couch, there were a couple design obstacles he faced along the way too.
For starters, to build the complex curves of the moorish-style arch above the screen wall, Wood’s carpenter had to build a custom jig and use XY coordinates from a 3D modeling computer program to plot the shape he would later cut out — something he had never done before.
Painting the room was a tedious task as well, considering that the fabric behind the wood paneling and on the acoustic screen walls had to be installed prior to painting the room. Wood and his carpenter spent several days taping and sealing off all of the fabric prior to painting.
Taking into account the experience of creating the home theater, along with the finished product, Wood is pleased with the project overall. He says that with so much integrated sound deadening, the room completely cancels out noises from the outside world. Wood calls the theater his “ultimate retreat.”
“Sometimes when I’m up in the home theater, I get the feeling of being a genie inside a bottle. I’ve never had a room with such ornate detail, and it is sometimes fun to just sit and take it all in. I can lose myself for hours up there, listening to music and watching my favorite movies,” he says.

Though the home theater is the renovation highlight for Wood, it’s hard not to overlook the rest of his Devonshire home’s features (and perhaps hope for him to put the home on the market for an incredibly low price?)
