In a continued effort to reach out to neighbors for support, Hillcrest parents are hosting a meeting at the school’s band hall tonight at 6. This will be a time for neighbors to meet band director Brian Smith and find out more about how the band is helping students. The hope is that this will inspire some more neighbors to support the band.
I’ve written about Brian Smith and his work with the band—both in our magazine, and on this blog. In less than two years he’s built the program from less than 20 kids to more than 150. There are a certainly a lot of deserving groups in our neighborhood, and this one ranks among the top. The kids have a district budget of about $11 per child this year, which doesn’t even begin to cover uniforms or instruments, so they need all the help they can get. Plus, the program is helping a lot of kids–which you can hear about firsthand tonight.
