Five bucks doesn’t get you much these days, that is, unless you’re doing lunch at Kel’s. This greasy spoon hasn’t changed much since it opened in 1963, and that’s just the way neighbors like it. You can, for example, still get a really good BLT here for less than your morning latte.

Because this place serves breakfast all day, that’s the route I usually go at lunchtime. A couple of eggs, toast, sliced tomatoes and a bottomless cup of coffee always make for a good lunch in my book. You can add bacon or sausage for a couple more bucks, too. If you want lunchtime food, there are several sandwiches and hamburgers in the $4 range, plus soup and chili. If you want fries, you’ll have a drop a few more dollars, but because the portions are big, you can split those with a friend.

Dinner here, which includes down-home meals like meatloaf with mashed potatoes and chicken and dumplings, will run you about $8. But check the blackboard before you order: They run some pretty good all-you-can-eat dinner specials every night.
