Mario and Alberto’s has long been one my favorite haunts. I grew up eating here, in fact. What keeps me coming back is the consistently good, authentic Mexican fare. Innstead of queso-laden chalupas, you’ll find traditional dishes, like alambres, the Latin equivalent of a kabob. You’ll also find things like stewed squash and potatoes as side items, instead of your typical refried beans.

One of my favorite dishes here is the callabasitas rellenas, large squash stuffed with meat and topped with soft cheese. Also worth trying is the Milanese, a thin fillet that is pounded flat and breaded, served over fried potatoes. If you go during lunchtime, you’ll find several specials for about $8. And, there’s a handful of weekday dinner specials in the $11 range.
