It’s tough to get a job these days, especially for recent high school and college graduates. The one thing that every student needs is a good resume, and the fact is that resume styles and requirements change as rapidly as technology. Here are a few tips from a Yahoo finance article provided by Investopedia to help all job hunters be more effective at expressing professional qualifications.
- Don’t use crazy fonts and graphics in a resume. Keep it clean.
- Don’t put the references directly in the resume. Add a line stating “References are available upon request.”
- Don’t write in full sentences.
- Don’t be vague. Have quantitative data to back up statements.
- Don’t use the words duties or responsibilities. Instead focus on accomplishments.
- Don’t include an objective. It typically sounds insincere and redundant.
- Don’t rely on spell-check. Thoroughly check each resume and cover letter for grammatical/spelling errors.
- Don’t use an unprofessional e-mail address (i.e. sparklepuppy@yahoo.com).
- Don’t include a picture (unless you are applying for a modeling or acting position).
- Don’t be too personal.
