Mattito's avocado enchiladas

Tex-Mex restaurants are few and far between in our neighborhood, with the exception of a few gems like Cantina Laredo and Luna de Noche. But Mattito’s, which recently opened a new location at Forest and Central, is in a league all its own.

Run by the Matt Martinez family (Matt’s Rancho Martinez), Mattito’s has already had quite a following in Dallas. The menu includes everything you could ask for – tacos, burritos, flautas, enchiladas, award-winning fajitas as well as Mexican seafood.

Giving in to my weakness for that deliciously green and fatty fruit, I ordered the avocado enchiladas, which are just that — two enchiladas stuffed with avocado and nothing else, topped with a creamy cilantro sauce. In hindsight, I should have been more adventurous and tried the chile relleno, a house specialty that stuffs a lightly breaded Anaheim pepper with beef, chicken or seafood, topped raisins and pecans. Next time, for sure.

In contrast to the more upscale Tex-Mex spots in Preston Hollow, I suspect that Mattito’s casual, party-like vibe will make it a hotspot for neighborhood meet-ups and post-football game hangouts.
